Frequently Asked Question

How can I backup all my files except AppData and the system registry files? These cause errors to be logged.

When you try to backup all files in your profile folder (i.e., C:\Users\joe) error such as the following will be logged by Replicator:
  • 01/05/2019 11:25:37: Error: Could Not Open Source File (Error 32 - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.): C:\Users\joe\ntuser.dat
  • 01/05/2019 11:40:41: Error: Could Not Open Source File (Error 1920 - The file cannot be accessed by the system.): C:\Users\joe\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.SkypeApp_kzf8qxf38zg5c\LocalCache\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches\{AFBF9F1A-8EE8-4C77-AF34-C647E37CA0D9}.1.ver0x0000000000000005.db

There are two ways around this problem:

  • Create separate jobs for each of your top-level source folders that you want to backup, like:
    • C:\Users\joe\Documents\ -> F:\My_Backups\Documents\
    • C:\Users\joe\Pictures\ -> F:\My_Backups\Pictures\
    • C:\Users\joe\Music\ -> F:\My_Backups\Music\

    If you create separate jobs for each source folder be sure not to dump all of the files from each folder into the same destination folder -- you'll end up with a jumble of files. C:\Users\joe\Documents -> F:\My_Backups\ and C:\Users\joe\Pictures -> F:\My_Backups\ would throw all of the contents of Documents and Pictures together into the My_Backups folder. This probably isn't what you want.

    If you're copying from a folder named Documents then be sure you're copying to a folder named Documents, for instance.

  • Or, add Global Exclusions for AppData and the ntuser.dat* files.

Adding Global Exclusion to Skip AppData Folder

  1. Click Edit Settings...

    image

  2. Click Other Settings tab

    image
  3. Be sure Enable Global Exclusions is checked, then click Change Global Exclusions

    image
  4. Click New Exclusion

    image
  5. The Global Exclusion Wizard form opens, click Next >

    image
  6. On Step 1, set Exclude All Files then click Next >

    image
  7. On Step 2, set Exclude if Found in Folders/Paths Matching this Pattern then type in the pattern \Users\*\AppData then click Next >

    image
  8. On Step 3, set Exclude if Found on Any Drive or Share then click Next >

  9. On Step 4, enter a description such as AppData Folder (your preference) then click Next >

    image
  10. On Step 5, check over what you've done then click Finish

    image

    (above) If you've entered something like C:\Users\joe\AppData\anything then you should see "Will Not be Replicated if this Global Exclusion is Enabled" under that section.

    image
  6. On Step 3, set Exclude if Found on Any Drive or Share then click Next >

    image
  7. On Step 4, enter a description such as Registry NTUSER.DAT Files (your preference) then click Next >

    image
  8. On Step 5, check over what you've done then click Finish

    image
  9. Now the exclusion is in the list and you can test it by typing in or copying a filename from your log and clicking Test All Exclusions (just to be sure). Then click Save.

    (above) Testing the file C:\Users\joe\ntuser.dat.log1 then you should see "Will Not be Replicated if this Global Exclusion is Enabled" under that section.
